Introducing Rescue Pacifica - February 2018

Introducing
Rescue Pacifica

We are a group of KPFA listeners and staff, who value KPFA in our lives, as well as the Pacifica Foundation, the services it provides to 5 stations in major metropolitan areas across the country, its historic archives, its over 250 local affiliate stations, and its role as the only community radio network in the US.

We came together because others have been working to gain control of KPFA and other stations, whose aims are counter to Pacifica's mission statement and bylaws.

We believe in
* Reliable news from a variety of independent sources and the field
* An anti-war stance, not support for "humanitarian intervention"
* Airtime for diverse grassroots community groups, including during morning drive time
* Bargaining and union rights not just for paid, but also unpaid staff, who provide over 70% of programming and keep KPFA on the air
* Addition of new technologies to broaden our reach online and through video
* Democratic governance, and shared decision making among workers and the community
* Retaining independence from private ownership, and no commercial underwriting
* Responsible budgeting and timely, transparent financial reporting
* Sustainable resolution of the financial crisis and debts, relying on bylaws and community support, instead of proposals that devalue, divide, or dissolve the network, such as bankruptcy, signal sales or swaps
* Keeping the Pacifica Foundation intact

These are not the aims of "Save KPFA", whose supporters are trying to separate KPFA from Pacifica, nor are they the present aims of some representatives of United for Community Radio, who have been promoting voluntarily filing for bankruptcy under the misguided illusion that the government will step in and reorganize our community radio network for the better.

Pacifica elections are now happening, and we are running candidates for Local Station Board who support our aims. These candidates are: Noni Session, Don Macleay, James McFadden and Daniel Borgström.
