In that "Crisis Group" I joined as referenced earlier, together we came up with a proposal for mediated network-wide involvement to improve our bylaws by listeners, staff, community members, in an inclusive manner. Mr. Boy Scout's allies (now calling themselves "New Day", reluctantly went along with this -- especially after inserting language about a "pledge" that scared off a good portion of folks -- and I and a few others should have had the guts to lobby harder against that simple but triggering wording).
The plan was to present that first to the KPFA Local Station Board. We got them on board for that, but when the presentation day came, they handed out one hard copy only per board member of this proposal and then required that they be handed back in. All other proposals, including the precursor of this current one -- which we in the crisis group had never agreed to present, were promoted widely and electronically. New Day allies betrayed those of us who had agreed to what would go out in good faith. They have demonstrated the same behavior before and since, and will not be those we can trust and who will air even more rightward-trending "news" if it keeps them their jobs. They will gladly tank the network to save themselves. Unfortunately, that is who some have been convinced by expensive missives to support with proposals that sound in a very general sense as good as the ones we developed with them, but which they won't ultimately allow.

** I've heard “Rebel News” volunteers have re-grouped to air a masterful mix of news now on KPFK despite the slasherating. Go volunteers!!! Many of us at KPFA, including some of us quite experienced in news-gathering, volunteered to help only to be turned away in favor of a cadre of select paid staff controllers. We SHOULD be working together (and it's cheaper!)
