Notes on what's happening at KPFA
-- Getting Tom Voorhees on the PNB
-- Rejecting the Bylaws change
-- Another program taken off the air

by Daniel Borgström

Saturday, January 11, 2020 -- KPFA's Local Station Board (LSB) meeting.

Not a lot of drama at this day's meeting, but two important things were decided. First of these was to choose four reps to the PNB (Pacifica National Board). That is one of the most important decisions the LSB makes each year. Other LSB tasks are to evaluate the General Manager and also the Program Director -- neither of whom have been evaluated for some time.

There are 24 seats on the board, and our affinity group, Rescue Pacifica, has 8 of these seats. So logically we could get one of our people, Tom Voorhees, on the PNB. But there was a potential glitch -- the majority faction, the UIR/SK, had made multiple attempts to force Tom off the PNB. First, a couple of years ago, they had launched a series of lawsuits. I'll spare you the excruciating details on that and just say they failed, and Tom kept his seat on the PNB. Then, during the takeover of WBAI in New York, one of the takeover-team (Donald Goldmacher) attempted to remove him from the PNB. No grounds for that were ever given, and the matter was dropped, but it was quite clearly because Tom was one of the PNB members who refused to go along with the takeover of WBAI.

So we considered it possible that the majority faction, (the UIR/SK) might find a pretext to block Tom from running. Well, they didn't. So today Tom Voorhees was elected to another year on the PNB without any fights or drama.

(UIR/SK is United for Independent Radio/SaveKPFA; both UIR and SK are deceptively named, adapted from the names of opposing groups.)

The other two listener reps chosen today for the PNB were Chris Cory and Akio Tanaka, both of the UIR/SK. (Donald Goldmacher, who'd been one of their PNB reps last year and played a prominent role in the takeover, didn't run for the PNB this time.)

One staff rep was reelected: Sabrina Jacobs. She was the acting chair of the PNB during the takeover of WBAI in New York.

(Please note that I'm trying to use a neutral term for the month-long takeover of WBAI. The takeover team euphemistically calls it "the October attempt to save Pacifica," and we call it "the coup" or "the hijacking of WBAI.")

THE PACIFICA RESTRUCTURING PROJECT

That concluded what is normally considered one of the LSB's most important tasks of the year. Then we had another agenda item of major importance. That was a motion to endorse the "Pacifica Restructuring Project." If enacted, this project will bring about a total change in Pacifica's bylaws, replace elected boards with ones where most seats will be appointed. LSBs of the other Pacifica stations are also voting on it; WPFW and WBAI have already rejected it unanimously.

The motion was presented by LSB members Susan da Silva, Akio Tanaka, and Donald Goldmacher. Donald participated remotely by speaker phone. The motion read:

"Be It resolved that the amended Pacifica Bylaws submitted to the Pacifica National Board in September 2019 by more than 1% of the Pacifica members, and subsequently accepted by the Pacifica National Board, be enacted as soon as possible."

Although almost everyone recognizes that the PNB is dysfunctional, the proposed restructuring will take out the democracy without remedying the problem. That was our view, so we opposed it. However, there were only 8 of us, and while I can't say what the others of our affinity group may have expected (after all, nobody likes to say a fight is lost before you fight it), I thought this awful thing was certain to pass. After all, the deep station at KPFA was home base for last fall's takeover of WBAI, and now this.

Discussion on that began at 1 p.m. and continued for nearly an hour. Everyone spoke, and as they spoke, one after another, it began to look like we were not totally alone in opposing it. To my surprise, even Sabrina Jacobs (former spokesperson for the takeover of WBAI) opposed it, as did several others of the LSB majority. So as the discussion drew to a close, it looked as though this just might be close to a tie.
(There is just too much said in that discussion to even try to quote here. I recommend listening to it on the archive at
kpftx.org)

Then came the vote:
4 in favor
13 no
4 abstained
Motion failed.

This should've been a roll call vote. It was not. Three of four who voted yes were Susan, Aki, and Tim; I'm not sure who the fourth was. Quite strangely, it appears that Donald Goldmacher hung up and left without bothering to vote for that motion which he'd put so much of his efforts into.

So KPFA's LSB did not endorse the Bylaws changes, the "Pacifica Restructuring Project." Nevertheless, our station's General Manager Quincy McCoy announced over KPFA's airwaves: "Members of the PNB voted on the proposed new bylaws & the LSBs are now voting and so should listener-members" -- possibly giving the erroneous sense that the proposal was well received.

There was also a second motion by Susan, an addendum to the first: "Be it resolved that the delegate members of the KPFA LSB believe the Pacifica membership should have a right to vote on the current bylaw proposal submitted by membership petition in September 2019."

Discussion opened and James McFadden of Rescue Pacifica said, "I recommend that we abstain on this motion. It is meaningless grandstanding that wastes LSB time. The current bylaws define when a listener election is required. This is an attempt to include propaganda."

No one else spoke on that motion, and we voted: 5 in favor.
14 abstained.

It was two o'clock. The meeting took a break, then continued on for another hour. Next on the agenda was "Public Comments," which is normally near the beginning of the meeting. Two people from the audience spoke: Stan Woods and Anthony Fest, both former LSB members.

"First off I want to congratulate the board for voting down the Corporate Model proposed Bylaws," said Stan Woods, and then commented on the station's sparse coverage of the antiwar movement. "KPFA has always been known as the antiwar station. Not so much anymore! ... KPFA has rarely had genuine anti-imperialist, antiwar activists on the air recently, instead preferring guests that MSNBC or NPR would have no problems with. One blatant example is the frequent appearance of Professor Karen Greenberg [Director of The Center on National Security] who in response to a question from myself stated, 'We should never forget that the FBI or CIA are there to protect us!'"

Across from Stan sat board member and KPFA show host Philip Maldari. Just the previous Sunday, Philip had hosted Karen Greenberg on his show, but she's been on at least once since then. Some have joked that she's on so often she might as well have her own show.

The second speaker, Anthony Fest, talked about KWMR, a community radio station at Point Reyes and Bolinas, which operates on $400,000, only about 12% of what KPFA spends. Not peanuts, but it showed that a community radio can run on a lot less than we might think necessary. In addition to about 95 adult volunteers, the station also had junior high and high school students performing as deejays. Maybe KPFA should consider something like that; it could generate interest among young people.

General Manager Quincy McCoy was absent. Business Manager Maria Negret wasn't there either. So treasurer Sharon Adams gave the treasurer's report along with a bit of obligatory WBAI bashing. There were no financial spread sheets.

Chris Cory, chair of the PNB's National Finance Committee, reported that Pacifica has hired a new iCFO, Anita Sims. She works for NETA (National Educational Telecommunications Association), and was the supervisor of her predecessor; so Ms. Sims is familiar with Pacifica.

Near the end of the agenda was an item listed as: "Old Business: Motion concerning PNB Directors." That's the way the secretary listed it, giving no indication that it's a motion Rescue Pacifica introduced in December; the item should have read: "Motion to consider the censure of Donald Goldmacher for accusations that could have tarnished the reputation of fellow PNB member Tom Voorhees during a Pacifica election." The LSB didn't get to it last month, nor at this meeting. So it'll just continue to stay there, possibly to the discomfort of some.

The meeting adjourned at 3:15, having lasted 4 hours.
--- --- --- --- ---

THE MONDAY MORNING AFTER
On Monday the 13th, just two days after the LSB meeting which General Manager Quincy McCoy did not attend, he took yet another show off the air. This latest target is "Work Week," hosted by Steve Zeltzer, the only show on KPFA devoted to labor issues and probably one of the very few if not the only show specifically on labor in the Bay Area. For a so-called progressive station to terminate coverage of such an important and under-covered subject indicates that KPFA is joining the class war on the wrong side.

Lacking any explanation from the GM, this could be seen as a retaliatory measure; Steve is a former LSB member who raised uncomfortable questions, and recently he was interviewed on WBAI in a discussion of the Coup.

During the last couple of years, General Manager McCoy has taken several programs off the air; these include "Guns & Butter," "Discrete Music," and "Twit Wit Radio." McCoy's biggest takedown was last October at KPFA's Pacifica sister station in New York, WBAI 99.5 FM, where former iED John Vernile appointed him "Consulting Programmer of Pacifica Across America." In that capacity McCoy replaced all local programming on WBAI's airwaves with piped in programs and awful machine music.

KPFA is now playing a cart with the lines, "Quincy McCoy, our terrific general manager."

This "terrific" GM needs to be evaluated by the LSB. That's one of the duties of the LSB, long overdue.

Siegel: "You're suing me!"

The lawsuit referenced here was withdrawn ("dismissed without prejudice") by the attorney who filed it and later re-filed as a defamation suit.

another incident at KPFA's Local Station Board meeting of March 7, 2010

by Daniel Borgström

Conn Hallinan's outburst at the March 7th board meeting was not the only unscheduled dramatic event of the day. Later, during the same meeting, Dan Siegel invited Richard Phelps to step outside for a fist fight. This related to a lawsuit, in which several of us, listener-members of Pacifica, were suing Dan Siegel for fraud. Richard Phelps was our attorney.

The incident took place during the break. People had gotten up, were walking around, leaving and returning to the room. Jim Curtis remained at his camera, however, so we have a video recording of Dan Siegel in action, cheered on by Sherry Gendelman and backed by the Hallinan brothers.

The scene begins as the camera pans to the right of the Chair, where the CL'ers ("Concerned Listeners") sit. Dan Siegel is speaking to Conn and Matt Hallinan. All three are on their feet, Conn reading what appears to be the legal papers of the lawsuit. We can't hear what they're saying, but Dan points at someone. At whom? Actually, that's about where I'm sitting. He's apparently pointing at me.

Siegel leaves his group, the camera following his movements, briefly losing him and showing a wall and window he's just passed. A moment later he reappears in front of me, where I'm sitting writing in my notebook, still unaware of the unfolding drama in which I'm about to be given a minor role.

"Daniel! You're suing me!"

Hearing that, I look up and there's Dan Siegel in front of me.

"Yes I am," I reply.

"Can I ask you something?" Siegel says.

"No," I tell him. "You can speak with my attorney."

"I'm going to speak to you anyway," Siegel says, and tells me that if I don't want to listen to him, I can leave. He then says that if I lose the suit I'll be liable for attorney and court costs, $60,000. I don't respond. I just sit there, recording his words in my notebook while he goes on talking at me. A moment later I see my attorney Richard Phelps standing beside me, and I say to Siegel, "Here he is. Speak to him."

He does, just as Sherry Gendelman passes by and stops to listen in. "If we weren't members of a nonviolent organization," Dan Siegel says to Richard Phelps, "I'd slap your face."

Sherry stands there laughing. Conn and Matt Hallinan move up behind Dan Siegel, who challenges Richard to step outside for a fist fight. Richard walks away, but Dan Siegel and his entourage follow. Siegel is talking almost nonstop and gesturing with his arms and hands, repeatedly challenging Richard to settle things like a man. Sherry seems to be enjoying this immensely. She joins in, at times speaking, at times laughing, and then breaks into a bit of song and dance.

"Richard's a coward!" she singsongs, swinging her hips back and forth. "Richard's a coward!"

Impressive talent. Sherry does play a great supporting actress role; maybe she could be the next Shirley Temple. But Richard is not impressed. He gives her a scornful look and reminds her of the reprimand she received from the California State Bar for malpractice, for lying to a client. "Sherry," he says, "You have no credibility."

Sherry falls silent, her smile gone. Looking stung, she makes her exit.

As the curtain falls, Dan Siegel is making a last attempt at goading Richard into a fight, but, without Sherry to put life into the script, the scene is over.

UPDATE August 2010

The "Concerned Listeners" slate (Siegel, Gendelman, Matt & Conn Hallinan & others) have changed their name to "Save KPFA." But that name belongs to an earlier group. Folks of the original "Save KPFA" fought the good fight for listener democracy for many years in the 1990's, starting in 1993. "Save KPFA" is their name; they earned it, and they have asked the CL'ers to immediately stop using it. But the CL'ers have still been calling themselves "Save KPFA."

Gaza Flotilla survivor runs for KPFA's board

by Daniel Borgström

Janet Kobren, a Gaza Freedom Flotilla survivor, is running for KPFA's Local Station Board (LSB) in the current 2010 election.

Many of us in the East Bay know Janet Kobren from the numerous causes and organizations she's been active in, such as: the weekly Sunday peace walk around Lake Merritt, EcoVillage's Middle East Study Group, picket lines in the Port of Oakland, the Oakland Tenants Union, and public meetings of KPFA's LSB.

This spring Janet sailed with the Gaza Freedom Flotilla which the Israelis attacked on May 31, killing nine activists and wounding dozens. Janet wasn't harmed, but she and about 700 others were abducted, taken to Israel and held in a prison at Be'er Sheva. Their belongings including camera equipment and all footage taken by independent journalists were confiscated. After three days Janet and the rest of the passengers were released due to pressure from the international community. Janet returned to Oakland, and became a candidate for KPFA's LSB.

The ten LSB candidates on Janet's slate, the ICR (Independents for Community Radio), are:

Janet Kobren
Tracy Rosenberg
Hyun-Mi Kim
Gina Szeto
Stephen Astourian
Cynthia Johnson
Naeem Deskins
Georgia Frazier
Monadel Herzallah
Kate Tanaka

While in Turkey, just after her release from the Israeli prison, Janet was interviewed by the Oakland Tribune; that article is below:

OAKLAND ACTIVIST, CARRYING AID TO GAZA, DESCRIBES ORDEAL
by Cecily Burt
Oakland Tribune
June 3, 2010

After surviving an assault by Israeli troops, three days imprisoned in Israel, and nearly 26 hours without sleep, Janet Kobren, an activist and co-founder of the Free Palestine Movement, is resting in a Turkish hotel and looking forward to returning home to Oakland today or Saturday.

Kobren, 67, spoke by phone Thursday from the Akgun Hotel in Istanbul, Turkey, where she is resting after the ordeal that began early Monday when Israeli commandos boarded six ships headed to Gaza to deliver humanitarian supplies. Nine aide activists aboard the Miva Marmara were killed, and several others were wounded. Kobren, Gene St. Onge, 63, of Oakland, and Paul Larudee of El Cerrito were aboard the Sfendoni, a ship that departed from Greece. [Larudee], who is also at the Akgun Hotel, has a black eye and bruises, Kobren said.

"Israel attacked us on international waters with U.S. weapons," Kobren said. "We expected there to be some sort of challenge. Our plan was to go from international waters into Gaza territory, not Israel."

Kobren said she did not fear for her life, but said "I never want to go (to Israel) again."

Kobren said she and the rest of the women from the ships were held for three days in Ella Prison in Be'er Sheva, Israel. Kobren said the women were housed several to a room, given minimal food and water. There were allowed to shower, but they were not given access to phones calls for "quite a long time," Kobren said. They had no contact with the men, but she has since learned that they were treated much less humanely. She said they were harassed, prevented from making telephone calls, and awakened every couple of hours.

After an international outcry, the Israeli government deported the activists. Five Americans from the Bay Area-based Free Palestine Movement were put on one of three Turkish Airways planes at 12:30 p.m., then they waited 12 hours while more than 400 other detainees were accounted for by Turkish authorities and put aboard the planes. The flight to Istanbul took two hours.

"It was a long ordeal, very uncomfortable waiting," said Kobren, who said she occasionally saw passengers beaten by the Israelis before they were put on the planes.

"Everybody was happy to leave Israel," she said They were greeted by crowds of people in Turkey who helped them with services and accommodations. They were never able to retrieve their luggage or personal belongings such as cell phones that the Israelis confiscated.

The travelers were also tested for carcinogens that might have been in the prison food and water, Kobren said, adding that she did not feel ill. Those test results will not be know for a week, she said.

Kobren said while the attention given to the aide groups is understandable, she said that people should not forget that the mission, to deliver humanitarian supplies to the people of Gaza, has not been fulfilled.

JANET KOBREN'S CANDIDATE STATEMENT

Listener Candidate for the KPFA Local Station Board
Statement

My name is Janet Kobren. I have been a listener member of KPFA and a media activist for over 20 years. I owe much of my political consciousness as well as my understanding of the influence of the media on our lives to KPFA and I learn something new every day from listening.

I have worked behind-the-scenes for years with the Coalition for a Democratic Pacifica (CdP) to promote a democratically-run Pacifica network and a community-oriented KPFA radio station. I am affiliated with Independents for Community Radio www.voteindyradio.org.

You might recognize my name because I was one of the over 700 unarmed civilians on the recent Freedom Flotilla to Gaza whose mission was to deliver humanitarian aid by sea to the people of Gaza, something that could only be done by breaking Israel's illegal blockade. The six sea vessels were boarded in International waters by Israeli navy commandos, another illegal act, and they took over all the ships by force. I returned home to Oakland after having been kidnapped, robbed, imprisoned and deported by Israel. The six ships along with all the cargo were confiscated by Israel as well.

One of the flotilla's planning strategies was to have the eyes of the world witness the action through the media. I organized a media team to focus on getting U.S. media coverage of the flotilla. Numerous independent journalists and camera persons were on all of the ships, including 14 of the 45 passengers on mine, the Sfendonh (Greek for slingshot). In addition to their personal belongings, all of their camera equipment, photos, and film footage was confiscated by Israel in an effort to control the media messages about what had happened. This experience re-reinforced to me the crucial role the media plays in our lives and why it is so important for me to continue supporting KPFA.

Only recently have I primarily focused on the struggle of Palestinians, however I am conscious of how certain groups and people in our society, including some KPFA listeners, are oppressed and ignored. Certain issues are marginalized as well and being an eclectic activist ("organizing" is my middle name) I have worked on a wide range of unpopular issues.

I have been part of the Nonviolent CommunicationSM (NVC) community and believe in the value of a respectful approach to conflict resolution. I also believe in the tactics of nonviolent direct action.

I live in Oakland and have been active locally and in my community. I am a former public high school math teacher and was an information technology professional and a quality assurance manager.

I am well organized, willing to work hard, a team player, able to compromise, dependable, and fun.

Please consider voting for me to represent you on the KPFA Local Station Board.

My endorsers include:
Cynthia McKinney
Cindy Sheehan
Laura Wells
James Vann
Carol Spooner
